Ruzibiza Furaha, a resident of Rubengera Sector in Karongi District, is appealing for help after spending several years living with a disability. He lives alone in Kibirizi Cell, Ndengwa Village, and is struggling to survive following an accident that left him disabled during the COVID-19 lockdown.
In an interview , Ruzibiza explained that he was in good health until the unfortunate accident. He recalls the evening he was arrested during a security operation. Upon being released, he fell in panic, breaking his leg. Despite months of treatment, doctors were unable to fully heal him, and after five months in the hospital, he was sent home without further solutions.
“It has been five years now since I became disabled because of the accident, even though I was born healthy. I spent a long time seeking treatment, but it didn’t work. The hospital told me to go home because there was nothing more they could do. Now, I survive solely on the kindness of others,” said Ruzibiza.
He added, “I haven’t been receiving the assistance given to other disabled individuals. I can’t leave my house, and that might be why I haven’t been considered. I ask the authorities to advocate for me.”
Ruzibiza dreams of being able to support himself. “If I received some financial assistance, I could buy a goat, just like others do, and it would provide me with income. I could even buy a small plot of land or food. I also need clothing; I have nothing to wear, as you can see,” he lamented.
The Rubengera Sector leadership is aware of his situation. Jean Bernard Nshimiyimana, acting executive secretary of the sector, confirmed that they will visit Ruzibiza soon to assess his needs and provide support.
“We are aware of his case. We will visit him to evaluate his situation and determine what assistance is required. No citizen should be left to suffer alone, and we will involve our partners and the district to ensure he gets help,” Nshimiyimana said.
Ruzibiza’s neighbors testify that he was once a hardworking porter, known for his integrity. They also call upon the government to intervene, as he has no one else to care for him.
